7 Moving Secrets When Moving from NYC to Florida

Once you decide to move to Florida from NYC, there are things you will need to keep in mind for a successful move. You will need to do a lot of homework beforehand to ensure you are not making a mistake, but once you are certain about your decision, there are a couple of secrets that will make your move a breeze.

Since an interstate move is never as simple as it may seem, you can use all the help you can get. Here are 7 moving secrets for you to consider.

1.     Plan

Considering the distance you will have to cover, it would be wise to spend as much time as you possibly can during the planning process. Prepare at least 8 weeks in advance before the actual moving date. Unlike smaller moves, you will not have the opportunity here to make multiple trips, in case you forgot something. This makes it important for you to ensure everything is taken care of so that your move is stress-free.

2.     Invest in Good Boxes

For longer moves, you will need to invest in good, durable boxes. Seeing how your prized possessions will make their way down the East Coast in moving boxes, it would not be a good idea to cheap out on packing supplies. Get the best one available so that your belongings stay protected throughout the trip.

If you are not sure where to get enough boxes, check out your local banks or liquor stores. In fact, chances are you might get your hands on all the boxes you want without paying a dime.

3.     Pack Smartly

For packing, think about what you need. Focus on stuff you cannot do without. Stuff that you don’t need, either donate them or get rid of them.

For longer moves, the lighter load will always be better. Take your essentials, but if need be, get rid of old stuff, like appliances, and get new ones instead when you finally reach your destination.

4.     Be Organized

Moving from NYC to Florida, know that the distance is over 1000 miles. Enough emphasis cannot be placed on the fact you will need to be organized through and through. You can start by taking pictures of your belongings so that you know what thing goes where when it is time to unpack at your new place.

Label each box and write as many details as you can. The last thing you need is to arrive at your new house, with a truck full of boxes with no descriptions. The better you label your boxes, the easier it will be for you to unpack.

5.     Prepare Accordingly to Deal with Florida’s Weather

Many people move away from Florida because they cannot deal with the weather. The weather in Florida is not unpredictable, but things can go from sunny to the worst cases in no time.

To avoid regretting the move to Florida, you will need to prepare to deal with the weather.  Some tips to consider include:

  • Always wear sunscreen. If your skin is sensitive, wear a large hat and cover your skin at all times. However, find breathable clothing to wear.
  • Make sure your home is cool – if not, it needs to have an AC. Keep an extra around, and have spare cash on hand for repairs so you don’t have to deal with the heat for longer than you should.
  • Indulge in morning and evening activities outdoors, but do not go out in the afternoon.
  • Make sure your home is fully covered against wind and flood damage.

6.     Draft a Move Checklist

When moving across the country, there is a lot that needs to be done. One of the most effective ways to stay on track is by drafting a moving checklist. When you have your checklist, break it down into weeks. Mark important dates on your calendar, so you do not leave out something important.

7.     Decide whether you will Buy or Rent

The reasons you should move to Florida are many, out of which the most common include a slow-paced retirement, a second home and/or the lifestyle. Whether you are moving for good or temporarily that will determine whether you should buy or rent.

You now have enough to work with to make your move to Florida a successful one. But in case you are not sure whether you will pull everything off on your own, hire a moving company. But don’t just hire any moving company you come across. Find one that meets and exceeds your expectations, without breaking your bank in the process. Not sure how? Click here to learn more.
